Leading the Way to Success

Our leaders draw upon their expertise and experience to support, inspire, and motivate our teams to achieve client goals.

Greg Jackson

PRESIDENT

In his 31-year career at Oftedal, Greg has seen and done it all. He has worked his way through the ranks—from a Laborer/Grade Checker Trainee to Laborer Foreman, Pipe Foreman, Grading Foreman, Project Superintendent, Project Manager, Estimator, Chief Estimator, Operations Manager—and now leads the company as its President. His knowledge of the industry and past experience in performing many of the duties his employees perform now provide him with a profound understanding of the issues his team faces on a daily basis.

Greg says that he has always had an interest in construction, even at a young age. After graduating from Campbell County High School in Gillette, Wyoming, he began working for a local handyman who was renovating trailer houses. From there he moved to Minnesota where he spent a year working for a contractor building pole barns in Minnesota and South Dakota.

Knowing that he wanted to build a career in construction, Greg then enrolled in Casper College (Wyoming) where he earned an associate’s degree in Construction Technology. Though he planned to continue his education and pursue a degree in Construction Management after a summer of working as a Quality Control/Quality Assurance Inspector performing soil testing for a California engineering firm, he scraped his plans to return to school in order to keep working on the large earth-moving project for the engineering firm until it was complete.

Once that project ended, he accepted a position as a Soil Technician on the Denver International Airport project in Colorado on which Kiewit Corporation was the general contractor. Greg discovered his passion working around all the large equipment and it was then that he decided to transition from the engineering side of the business to the construction/contractor side.

Greg explains that he fell in love with the grading and excavation side of construction because they are the first ones on the project, providing a solid foundation for the rest of the project. “Seeing a project unfold from the start all the way through to the finish gives me a sense of pride and accomplishment,” he says, adding, “Besides, what is better than getting paid to play in a giant sandbox with big toys? It’s priceless!”

When he came to Oftedal, Greg began to work his way up through the ranks. He also went back to school and earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, with a minor in Project Management, from Colorado Technical University.

Greg says that he does not regret one minute of his 31 years with Oftedal and that he is truly honored to have the opportunity to lead the company into the future, keeping the Oftedal families legacy alive and well. He explains that, although he loved working in the field, he is happy to now be in a position to help others build their careers. “My first love will always be working in the field, contributing to building the project and being a part of the day-to-day progress,” he says. “On the other hand, my transition to management gives me the opportunity to grow the company and provide the same opportunities I had to others.”

As President of the company, Greg is focused not just on the project portfolio, but on the people. He leads by example, displaying his passion for the industry and company as well as confidence, integrity, honesty, good listening skills, decision-making skills, and problem-solving ability. He fosters innovation and values safety above all else—aiming to ensure that each and every member of the Oftedal team goes home at night in the same or better condition than they showed up in. As a leader, he tries to make every employee feel as if they are a part of a family, not just a number.

Describing his leadership philosophy, he says, “I have two favorite quotes that have always stuck with me when it comes to leadership: ‘Integrity is doing the right thing when no one else is watching’ and “The role of a leader is not to come up with all the great ideas but to create an environment in which great ideas can happen.’ ”

Jacie L. Smith

CONTROLLER AND SECRETARY/TREASURER

Jacie joined Oftedal in 2006 as IT Manager after having her second daughter. During her 6-year tenure in the position, she leveraged her accounting degree and technology classes from DeVry University as well as a wide range of experience in accounting and IT. In addition to working for a small CPA firm in Arizona, Jacie was an Assistant Controller and IT Infrastructure Manager for a construction and architectural firm in Scottsdale, Arizona, where she says she “fell in love with cost accounting and construction.” Realizing that she wanted to progress her career in this area, she began graduate courses in Project Management at the Keller Graduate School of Management.

She then moved to Las Vegas to work for a well-known land developer,

gaining experience in construction accounting for earth-moving, utilities, and office and industrial park build projects. She also learned a lot about lease/rental and tenant improvements from an ownership perspective.

After working in Arizona and Las Vegas, the Glendive, Montana native returned to Montana to be closer to family and worked as an Internal Auditor at a community bank and later managed accounting for a small marine and cycle dealership.

After six years as Oftedal’s IT Manager, she returned to her accounting roots, moving to the Payroll Department where she worked on payroll, reporting, the Employee Stock Ownership Plan, and benefits for several years before assuming her current position in 2016. In her current role as Controller, Jacie manages the Miles City office and works with the President, Vice Chairman, HR Department, and outside vendors to manage Oftedal’s benefits programs. She oversees the organization’s daily accounting operations, including the job and equipment cost accounting, payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable departments. Jacie formulates budgets that match forecasted revenue and works with the President and Vice Presidents to help guide Oftedal’s strategic financial decisions and has served as the company’s Corporate Secretary/Treasurer for the last 6 years.

Jacie says that she loves investigating and solving the problems that arise in construction cost accounting. She also likes the people aspect of the job. “ I really enjoy the individuals that I get to work with on a daily basis,” she says. “In addition to managing an awesome staff, I have been fortunate to work with and learn from Bill Oftedal, Jeff McDonald, and several of the company’s senior leaders.”

When it comes to leadership, Jacie believes that open communication and listening skills are the key to success. She also feels that how she handles challenges defines her as a leader, and says, “I always try to tackle those [challenges] with honesty, integrity, professionalism, and compassion.”

Bradley M. Olson

VICE PRESIDENT/SR. PROJECT MANAGER

Bradley joined the Oftedal team in 1996 in Laramie, Wyoming and has worked in several fields over the past 27+ years with the company. He began his construction career at a gold core drilling company and then worked at a local Ready Mix while attending Malta High School in Montana. He continued to work while earning his degree in Construction Engineering Technology and Design Drafting at Montana State University–Northern.

Shortly after graduation, he joined the Oftedal team. He has a wide range of project experience, having moved throughout the company in various positions and completed various trainings for those positions.

His longevity with the company is a testament to his willingness to keep an open mind and grow and adapt to changes in technology and the methods of performing the work. He enjoys the family atmosphere at Oftedal and says that he likes the personal approach at the company. “Your name matters here,” he explains. “You’re not just a number, and the employee ownership of the company creates an environment for everyone to feel they are a part of something.”

Bradley finds great satisfaction in seeing a project through from start to finish—from the bidding process to pre-construction and throughout the construction phase. “I enjoy looking back at the entire process and reminiscing about the challenges and successes within the project,” he explains.

One of the things Bradley likes most about his leadership role at Oftedal is the process of finding the right people, getting them started in their careers, and showing them how rewarding and fulfilling a construction career can be—and that they can make a great living at it! “I like being a problem solver and getting my teams involved with the process,” he explains. “Each team member has an opportunity to grow their skills and further contribute to the success of the project.”

Matt Otterby

VICE PRESIDENT/OPERATIONS MANAGER

Matt joined the Oftedal team as a Field Engineer in 2000 after graduating from South Dakota State University with a degree in Construction Management. Over his long career with the company, he has also held the positions of Foreman, Superintendent, Project Manager, Equipment Manager, and Operations Manager.

Matt has been a construction guy his entire life. His father co-owned a commercial and Ag steel company in Mitchell, South Dakota and from a young age Matt enjoyed going to work with him on Saturdays. During the summers he worked for the company throughout high school and into college. He broadened his experience during college with internships on a construction crew at a state-of-the-art soybean processing facility and on a concrete crew that was building a large dairy farm. Matt says that after college, working construction in the Montana and Wyoming region appealed to him, so he sought a job with Oftedal.

Matt enjoys watching projects transform as they move from start to finish. He credits his longevity and success with Oftedal to the people, saying, “I could not be successful without the people I work with.” He believes that successful leadership starts with integrity and strives to act with integrity in everything he does.

Chris Audiss

VICE PRESIDENT/CHIEF ESTIMATOR

Chris, a native of Winner, South Dakota, joined Oftedal in 2000 as a Field Engineer after graduating from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology with a degree in Civil Engineering. Over his long career with the company, he has also held the positions of Foreman, Superintendent, Project Manager, and Lead Estimator.

In his current position as Vice President and Chief Estimator, Chris reads and interprets plans, proposals, and other job-related documents to understand the project, including the client’s needs and expectations, and create budgets and bids for jobs. He then works with the Oftedal team, subcontractors, and suppliers to deliver the most safe and cost-effective project possible.

Chris says he likes being involved in the interesting and challenging projects on which Oftedal works and enjoys seeing a project through from the bidding stage to final completion. He says that his job is made easier by the fact that he works with a great team. “Working with the great employee owners at Oftedal makes it easy for those of us in leadership positions,” he explains. “Our team has the knowledge and experience to complete these projects safely, on time, and on budget—and they are easy to work with.”
