This service uses a pre-expanded, UV-resistant, hydro-insensitive, and environmentally safe foam, making it a safe, fast, and economical method for filling any size void or cavity.
Our advanced fillfoam is a versatile product, pumped as a fully expanded material, ideal for filling abandoned or obsolete underground structures such as tanks, tunnels, pipes, culverts, and shafts. It’s also perfect for filling voids under surface structures like roads, buildings, streets, sidewalks, parking lots, and for raising concrete and patios.
How It Works
The process involves using a Hi-Volume pump to blow fully expanded resin-based material and air through a mixing cylinder. This aerates the resin and creates foam. At the bottom of the mixing equipment, a hardener is sprayed into the expanded resin. This material gels the cell’s resin exterior, completing the setting process and giving the cells rigidity.
Initially, the foam is very wet and achieves its final strength upon drying, which typically occurs within 24-48 hours under normal conditions. Drying time can vary based on environmental factors, such as humidity and temperature. In underground situations with consistent water presence, the foam may not completely dry out. However, maintaining warmer material temperatures and high ambient temperatures can speed up the setting times.
The final product is created by a reaction between the resin and the hardener, which produces no heat and leaves only water as a byproduct. The foam is nitrogen-rich and harmless to the environment, as nitrogen is a non-toxic element that makes up 78% of the air we breathe.
Real-World Application
Our advanced fillfoam Injection service has already proven its worth. During our recent Laramie City Streets project, foam filling provided a cost-effective alternative to the traditional method of excavating around live utilities to access and remove old pipes or culverts, followed by backfilling and compacting the excavation.
Instead of removing the old pipe, we pumped 1,300 pounds of foam into 770 lineal feet of 6” existing water line and 440 lineal feet of 10” water line. Averaging 29 pounds per minute, the two lines were filled in just 45 minutes. Including setup and teardown, the entire project was completed in less than four hours, saving the company a week of work and eliminating the hazards of digging around underground utilities.
Our next project will take place in Casper, WY, where we will fill 300 lineal feet of 16” abandoned water main on Poplar Street.
