Oftedal Construction is committed to fostering the future of heavy-civil construction by actively investing in the next generation of construction professionals through community-focused initiatives. Our latest endeavor—a hands-on career day for eastern Montana high school students and their families in Miles City, Forsyth, and the surrounding areas—demonstrates our dedication to introducing young people to the opportunities available in the construction and trades industries. This event, supported by Oftedal along with the Montana Contractors Association (MCA), Prince Inc., and other local businesses, was designed to give students hands-on field experience.
This workforce initiative took place on November 6, 2024 for students in grades 9-12 (including homeschooled students) and their families. Attendees experienced hands-on heavy equipment experience and other construction activities giving them a practical look into what the construction industry has to offer.
The heavy-civil career day provides students the rare opportunity to operate large heavy equipment and gain insight into the essential role of construction trades in constructing local infrastructure. Beyond simply observing, students sat behind the controls of various equipment, including 40 ton haul trucks, D7 and D8 dozers, 30 ton excavators and more, giving them an authentic feel for the work. This immersive approach is aimed at breaking down misconceptions about the industry and highlighting the rewarding nature of careers in construction. By connecting students with skilled professionals, Oftedal hopes to inspire a new generation of operators, engineers, and construction experts to explore the diverse opportunities available.
The Build Montana Pop-Up represents Oftedal’s commitment to community engagement and workforce development, aiming to inspire the next generation by providing them with the chance to operate heavy machinery, interact with industry professionals, and gain practical exposure. This event not only builds interest and skills but also emphasizes the importance and fulfillment of careers in construction, making it an impactful event for Montana’s future workforce.
