In November, we were awarded a $49,500,000 highway reconstruction project by the South Dakota Department of Transportation.  The 1-year, 8-month project, which runs through June 26, 2026, includes the complete reconstruction of US 385 from Paktola Reservoir south to Sheridan Lake.

“We are honored that the South Dakota DOT has entrusted Oftedal with this monumental project,” said Greg Jackson, President. “Our team is eager to begin and is committed to delivering a successful outcome. We look forward to demonstrating our expertise and dedication throughout this endeavor.”

The project includes a large and diverse scope of work within the contract period and will require an estimated 70-80 skilled operators and laborers to accomplish the task, including a night crew of 25-30 employees which work from April through October 2025.

We will be moving and placing over 400,000 CY of blasted rock and 1,000,000 CY of excavation and unclassified excavation.  In all, an estimated 108,000 tons of gravel surfacing material will be hauled, primarily by Oftedal side dump trucks, and placed by Oftedal blade operators.

The project also requires the installation of 15,000 LF of concrete reinforced pipe (RCP) and corrugated metal pipe (CMP). Subcontractors will assist with the installation of the concrete pipe, which includes approximately 300 LF of massive, 15′ x 16′ precast box culverts and 150 LF of cast-in-place 13′ x 13′ double run RCP, while Oftedal crews will install the CMP pipe, the largest of which is 72 inches.

During the project, three sections of US 385 from Paktola Reservoir south to Sheridan Lake will be closed intermittently during the following timeframes: April 28 through June 13, 2025; August 12 through Oct 17, 2025; and October 20, 2025 through March 6, 2026.

We are proud to be a part of such a significant project and look forward to the next 20 months.
